Overall report for the financial year ’08 – ’09.
This year has witnessed a marked contraction in the voluntary market in carbon due in large part to the prevailing economic climate and Treeflights has experienced a significant reduction in tree orders for Wales and Peru. Fortunately, the new planting projects in Sumatra, Spain and particularly Kenya have started to attract orders that have in part compensated for the reduced demand in our established projects with the result that overall turnover has remained consistent with previous years (in the region of £10,000 per annum).
The Lampeter/Bore Community Carbon Link project which Treeflights hosts and launched in December ‘08 has drawn much interest from the media in Wales which has led to considerable orders for cashew nut trees with the partner community. We have started employing our first permanent salaried worker in Bore, Alex Katana and have supplied the Kundeni Primary School with a new laptop, inverter and solar panels. This has largely been made possible with support from the Welsh Assembly Gold Star Communities Scheme and the Waterloo Foundation. Many thanks to both. Lead organiser in Bore, Andrew Wright informed us last week that the rains had finally come and this enabled the team to distribute a further 1000 neem trees. Well done Andrew.
Another major achievement this year has been the full transferral of the ownership of our main planting site at Pant-y-pond which is now held entirely under the company’s name. In order to secure the trees and their absorbed carbon we have put in place legally binding and irrevocable restrictive covenants (with the UK Land Registry) to the effect that the land must remain as woodland and be managed for maximum carbon retention in perpetuity, irrespective of ownership. Furthermore, public access to the young forest has been likewise ensured so that all customers may visit the site, locate and check on the progress of their trees at their own discretion.
For the immediate future we do not expect a rapid upturn and expect 2110 to be a further year of consolidation rather than growth. So we will not be launching new planting projects in the coming year, however we will continue to innovate and maintain the vision that planting trees to absorb carbon can be a valid part of our strategy to address climate change, providing it is done ethically and with recognition of the limitations. To this end, from April ’10 onwards, we are planning to give all customers the unique GPS co-ordinates for their trees, on confirmation of planting.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our clients, partners and in particular the many volunteers who have freely given their support over the last year. Working together we have now planted over 7,000 trees in 4 continents.
